It’s hard to imagine a world without artists. They create the music we dance to, the paintings that adorn our walls and the video games that enthrall us for hours on end.

But until about 50,000 years ago, there were no artists anywhere in the world. Then, in Europe, cave paintings began to appear. Over the next 20,000 years or so, artists in Europe created amazing works of art in stone, bone, ivory and wood, as well as on cave and rock walls.

By about 4000 BC, the technology for making permanent images on cloth had arrived in Egypt. By 3000 BC, the Egyptians were stamping patterns on their linen burial shrouds. And about 2000 BC, the ancient Greek island of Crete began manufacturing painted pottery.

But it was not until about 1200 AD that the manufacture of artists’ materials and the commercial use of art in Europe truly took off. Today, we take for granted that we can go to a store and buy pencils, paints, canvas and other materials to create art. But for almost 4000 years, all artistic creations had to be done manually. Then, in the 13th century, the mechanical penknife, ruler, compass and set-square came on to the market. Soon after, artists’ brushes made of hair became widely available. Soon, too, artists began using chalk on blackboards, and the merchant ships of Europe began supplying their crews with art material.

Today, artists are still important. But the role and status of artists have changed. Most people in developed countries now listen to recorded music, watch television and play video games rather than making music, dancing or entertaining.
